Winchester Christian Academy is a private school in Winchester, TN, dedicated to providing a Christ-centered alternative to the public school system. They are a non-profit organization funded entirely through tuition and donations. Since 2008, WCA has continually grown and intends to expand their grade levels to include high school in the near future. With plans to start a capital fundraising campaign to support this expansion, WCA knew it was time to invest in design to take them to that next level. They believed it was important to give the school’s logo and website a polished look and feel that measured up to their high education standards.
We began our partnership with WCA by sitting down with them to understand their identity as a school, their current position, and their future goals. Because this was the first time they had invested in branding and other design work for their school, we had the opportunity to help build their visual identity from the ground up. Using WCA’s well-defined mission and strong sense of purpose as guiding principles, we established a visual style, logo, and website that reflects who they are as a school and where they hope to go in the future.
When it came to establishing a visual identity for WCA, it was important to choose a design that reflected the school’s commitment to academic excellence, as well as its mission to offer a welcoming, inspiring environment for every student. Using the school’s colors, purple and gold, as the main color palette, we developed a visual style using free flowing shapes and photography featuring students. This design not only speaks to WCA’s current body of younger students but can also be seamlessly translated into materials for high school-aged students as the school continues to grow.
For the new logo, we went with a design that is classic and academic. The logo appears in WCA purple and features a shield-shaped logo mark with the school’s mascot, a lion, alongside timeless typography. This design aligns with WCA’s mission and purpose, clearly presenting them as an institution dedicated to high spiritual and educational standards.
The shield logo mark was WCA’s favorite design, but the initial concept did not quite hit the mark. We went back to the drawing board, added more detail to the lion, and ultimately landed on the final logo mark.
The biggest tool WCA needed was a robust, well-designed website, a place where they could show potential families why their school was the ideal place for their children. They also wanted a platform where they could connect and share with their current students. Keeping with their freshly discovered visual identity, we used photography of real students learning and growing at WCA as a focal point of the website. This combination of photography, organic shapes, and bright colors captures the fun, educational, and Christian-based environment WCA offers to students.
